MY PROCESS

I make atmospheric paintings that call to mind familiar environments such as underwater scenes, and the vastness of space, earth and sky. Using oil paint, I apply translucent layers that overlap and build the illusion of depth, adding and removing paint in nearly equal amounts. My intention is to create images that feel ethereal, spacious and otherworldly. To achieve visual textures, I use a wide array of tools. Inspired by the transcendental painters of the 1930’s and 1940’s, choral music and illustrations from antique children’s books, I stay motivated to explore my vision. Viewers will perhaps respond emotionally to my paintings, remembering a tactile experience, a scene, a piece of music or a story. The idea of using abstraction to hint at reality is what drives my process.
